IMOLA Project > Activities > Aquaculture > Aquaculture Survey

Proper understanding of aquaculture status in the lagoon is the first step towards its resource management planning.

IMOLA undertook the aquaculture survey in 2006-2007 to understand the current status of pond culture activities in the Tam Giang-Cau Hai Lagoon. The survey covered 12 communes, involving interpretation of satellite imageries, GPS mapping, and field interviews, to identify:

♦ The location, number, and size of the aquaculture ponds
♦ The ownership and user information
♦ The type of aquaculture pond and pond properties
♦ Water and pond bottom properties
♦ Water source and exchange details
♦ Culture detail including farmed species, timing, stocking densities, feeding, disease, chemical use, and yield

The 12 target communes were Hai Duong, Huong Phong, Loc Binh, Phu An, Phu Dien, Phu My, Phu Xuan, Quang Cong, Quang Phuoc, Quang Thai, Thuan An, and Vinh Giang.

The physical properties of aquaculture ponds in these communes were traced from the satellite imagery while newly created ponds were mapped manually with GPS. The pond owners/users were also interviewed to provide the detailed attribute data for each identified pond. Both mapping and interview data were then integrated into a GIS database. This database is a valuable sources of information to spatially identify the source of pollution or to monitor and reorganize the aquaculture pond areas.
