IMOLA Conducting Aquaculture Survey for the Entire Tam Giang - Cau Hai Lagoon

IMOLA is currently undertaking the survey (census) of around 5,400 aquaculture ponds in 19 communes out of 33 communes of Tam Giang - Cau Hai Lagoon in collaboration with Sub-Department of Aquaculure of Thua Thien Hue Province. This is a supplimental effort to the survey that was conducted in 12 lagoon communes (3,677 ponds) in 2007 (see Note).

IMOLA is conducting this survey to aquire critical data for the Sub-Department to revise the aquaculture master plan of Thua Thien Hue in general and Tam Giang - Cau Hai Lagoon in particular as well as to assist aquaculture replanning at different levels. With the use of satellite images and ground truthing, the IMOLA GIS team mapped out the latest structure of aquaculture ponds, which is followed by interview of each pond owner to collect pond and aquaculture property data.

Prior to the field interview with local farmers, IMOLA provided technical training to the Sub-Department and commune staff on questionnaire preparation and interview methods. The prepared survey questionnaire was then field tested by Sub-Department and IMOLA staff before finalization. The staff of the Sub-Department and communes are currently conducting field interviews based on the IMOLA technical training and field-tested questionnaires.

Through this on-the-job training under IMOLA guidance, the Sub-Department and commune staff are expected to accumulate experiences and improve their capacities in undertaking similar surveys for policy making and aquaculture planning in the future.

The survey is expected to produce fundamental information for aquaculutre replanning such as i) location, number, and size of aquaculture ponds, ii) ownership and user information, iii) type of aquaculture ponds, iv) water and pond bottom properties, v) water source and exchange details, iv) culture detail including farmed species, timing, stocking densities, feeding, disease, chemical use, and yield.

The above data will be analysed together with other environmental data produced and available at IMOLA such as lagoon water and sediment quality data, landuse data around the lagoon, fishing gear locations, and others to produce sound lagoon management options for the Province.

Further, IMOLA is planning the similar survey of other types of aquaculture including pens (net enclosure) and cages.
