| IMOLA Project > Activities > Capacity Building > Promotion Centers |
The IMOLA Project established "promotion centers" in eight lagoonal communes (within CPCs) in early 2007, in response to the government request to have tools to promote better communication, raise awareness, and disseminate information. More specifically, the main functions of these promotion centers are:
| ♦ | To raise awareness on lagoon resource status and its conservation among local populations |
| ♦ | To disseminate information on better fishing and aquaculture practices and methodologies |
| ♦ | To provide a base for capacity building in responsible capture fisheries and aquaculture |
| ♦ | To provide the CPCs and commune fisherfolk with the good communication tools for improved coordination and networking |
Physically, a promotion center is a room located in a Commune People's Committee building, equipped with a computer with an internet connection, a printer, a telefax machine, and a set of training and extension materials and magazines on fisheries and aquaculture for reference by local fisherfolk. A part-time promotion staff is assigned to maintain the function of the promotion center, providing information and services to the local fisherfolk with the support from the IMOLA Project.
Unfortunately, the promotion centers are currently not utilized fully and effectively for several reasons. The project is working towards revitalizing its functions.
