| IMOLA Project > Activities > Capture Fisheries > Spawning Grounds |
As a part of activities of local fisheries associations (FAs), the IMOLA Project has been assisting the community-based demarcation and protection of spawning grounds.
Through discussions with local fisherfolk and commune authorities in the Loc Binh Commune, the idea of planning and protecting three shallow spawning and nursery grounds, with a total area of around 55 ha, was identified as an important step towards avoiding the overexploitation of fisheries resources. The aim of the demarcation was to:
| ♦ | Protect the reproductive habitat of aquatic organisms |
| ♦ | Safeguard the spawning process and restrict fishing at times when juvenile fish are most easily caught |
| ♦ | Provide FAs and commune authorities with and additional tool to limit illegal fishing |
| ♦ | Educate and raise people's awareness in protecting and utilizing the resources in a sustainable manner |
This small example of lagoon resource management is innovative as it sets a good case for co-management of lagoon resources and the use of local knowledge on fishery resources.
As a part of zoning for lagoon resource management, local FAs are also demarkating the FA areas. For more details on FA area demarcation, please refer to Demarcation of FA Areas and Restricted Areas.
