IMOLA Project > Activities > Environmental Survey > Water and Sediment

The IMOLA Project has conducted repeated water and sediment surveys to provide a better and scientific understanding of the current status of aquatic environment in the Tam Giang-Cau Hai Lagoon. The surveys covered the entire waterbody, from the north (Tam Giang) to the south (Cau Hai), with repeated sampling at 37 stations.

The data on water quality, sediment organic matter, and macrozoobenthos were collected at all 37 sampling points (shown in blue and red colors on the map) while the data on heavy metals in water and sediment were gathered at 12 sampling poitns (shown in red in the map).

The parameters measured at respective samping points were are listed in the following table.

Measured parameters during water and sediment sampling survey

Water quality: Depth, transparency, temperature, pH, salinity, DO, BOD, COD, chlorophyll a, total coliform, fecal coliforms, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ortophosphate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus
Water heavy metals: Copper, lead, cadmium, zinc
Sediment organic matter: Total organic matter, chlorophyll a, phaeopigments, chloroplastic-pigment equivalent, carbon autotrophic, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, biopolimeric carbon, C-auto/BPC, trophic index
Sediment heavy metals: Copper, lead, cadmium, zinc, DDE, DDD, DDT, DDTs-sum, alpha-HCH, beta-HCH, delta-HCH, HCHs-sum
Sediment macrozoobenthos: Abundance, biomass, Shannon-Weaver index, species evenness

In addition to the above parameters covering the entire Tam Giang-Cau Hai Lagoon, water was also sampled and tested for basic water quality parameters at eight monitoring points located in the areas of high aquaculture concentration, namely the Quang An and Quang Thanh area (3 points) and the lagoon area under Thuan An, Phu An, Phu My, and Phu Xuan (5 points).

Water quality parameters measured in concentrated aquaculture areas

Water quality: Temperature, pH, conductivity, salinity, solid suspension, turbidity, DO, BOD, COD, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ortophosphate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus

The interpretation and analysis of the above data is currenly ongoing.
